Sausalito CA

Tom says:

It's probably not necessary to write much about Sausalito. Of all the towns in Marin it is undoubtedly the best known worldwide. For those considering purchasing a home in Sausalito, probably the most important fact that is not always readily apparent is that the weather varies tremendously from one part of this city to another. Close to the Golden Gate Bridge are some of the best views in the bay Area, arguably the world. That same area also is home to some of the coolest summers outside of Antartica. One neighborhood is nicknamed "Hurricane Gulch". If outdoor living is a low priority and incredible views a high priority, this is the place for you.For those who love the ambiance of Sausalito, plus the easy commute to San Francisco, but crave warmer weather, look into finding as house in the "Banana Belt" of Sausalito. The views are more often of Richardson Bay and Belvedere, rather than San Francisco, but al fresco dining is much more possible. Finally, don't overlook the option of living on a houseboat. The houseboats on Richardson Bay have evolved over the years from being decidedly anti-establishment funky pads to some very spiffy residences. All the while these communities have maintained a sense of being alternative to the mainstream. And the prices can be quite reasonable.

Wikipedia says:

Sausalito is a San Francisco Bay Area city, in Marin County, California, United States. Sausalito is 8 miles (13 km) south-southeast of San Rafael, at an elevation of 13 feet (4 m). The population was 7,061 as of the 2010 census. The community is situated near the northern end of the Golden Gate Bridge, and prior to the building of that bridge served as a terminus for rail, car and ferry traffic. Developed rapidly as a shipbuilding center in World War II, the city's industrial character gave way in postwar years to a reputation as a wealthy and artistic enclave, a picturesque residential community (incorporating large numbers of houseboats), and a tourist destination. It is adjacent to, and largely bounded by, the protected spaces of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
