If you like to stay clear of the Bay Area fog, want to be closer to the Wine Country, raise horses, or just want a house that is affordable in a good school district, Novato is a good choice. It is geographically large, so has a variety of neighborhoods. Hamilton Field is a former military base that has been converted into an enclave of both single family houses and condos. The area off of Ignacio Boulevard has mature landscaping, a shorter commute South, and sports a lovely golf course and club in its midst. Downtown Novato has a quaint feel, a bit like Mayberry U.S. A. The area up near San Marin Drive feels more traditionally suburban, but then as one travels West it changes to larger properties, including true operating ranches and two horse stables open to the public. To the east are large lots and some more ranches off of Atherton Avenue. Finally, further east is the newer Stone Tree Golf Club with some equally newer houses overlooking the fairways.
