Fairfax is a unique Marin town. Some residents there even post bumper stickers on their cars stating "Only In Fairfax". In some respects it feels like it is a place still in the 60's. One sees plenty of tie-dyed shirts, boutiques reminiscent of the Haight Ashbury, and Grateful Dead memorabilia. In other respects it just feels like old Marin, before the exodus to the burbs drove housing prices up. The downtown offers not just boutiques, but also the necessities that used to be found in all small towns: a movie theater, an ice cream parlor, a lumber yard/hardware store, in addition to bars, cafes, and restaurants.
Fairfax boasts beautiful weather, a shorter distance to Stinson, Bolinas, and Tomales Bay, immediate access to Mount Tamalpais trails, and some of the most reasonably priced housing in Marin. Its main drawback for those commuting to San Francisco is that it is a much longer commute than if one lived in someplace like Corte Madera or Mill Valley.
